Harriet B. Mantell, MD
Harriet Baylies Mantell, MD age 100 passed away on September 28, 2024 at Luther Crest in Allentown where she resided with her husband of over 76 years, Gerald J. Mantell.
She was born in New York City, NY on April 19, 1924, daughter of the late Harold Baylies and Celia (Zomback) Baylies.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and Phi Beta Kappa from Hunter College in New York City, a Master of Science degree in Genetics from the University of Wisconsin, and an MD with Alpha Omega Alpha from Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago. She trained in Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and then was certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.
She was chief Pediatrician of the Multiple Handicap Clinic at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City Missouri, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at both the University of Kansas Medical School and Missouri University School of Medicine. In Allentown, she was Assistant Superintendent of Clinical Services at Allentown State Hospital, having served as Acting Superintendent and as Director of the Mental Health Institute for Children.
After retiring she was a volunteer for Hospice and Planned Parenthood, was a consultant for Crippled Children and for Retarded Children in Allentown, PA. She volunteered as a Common Ground mediator and tutored immigrant physicians qualifying to practice in the United States.
She believed in secular humanism.
Survivors: Husband Gerald J. Mantell; Sons and daughters-in-law: Joseph & Nan Mantell, of Bridgewater, NJ, Paul & Ann Mantell of Fort Myers, FL, David & Amy Mantell Rochester, NY and Daniel & Marcia Mantell of Hanover, MA; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.; sister-in-law Marion Waterston and niece Jennifer Wellman of Albuquerque, NM. Predeceased by her only sister, Zoe Baylies.
Memorial Service: Saturday October 5, 2024 at 2:30PM in Crest Hall at Luther Crest 800 Hausman Road Allentown, PA 18104.
