George Frederick “Fred” Bonsall
George Frederick “Fred” Bonsall a very well-known and respected architect passed away on Sunday August 3, 2025 at the age of 81 from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. He was the husband of Randa (Means) Bonsall.
Born on May 17, 1944 in West Chester, PA to Verna (Smith) and George Bonsall, who preceded him in death.
Fred graduated from West Chester High School class of 1962. He went on to attend Pennsylvania State University and later the Philadelphia College of Art where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1966. He became registered to practice architecture in 1973, holding registration in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. In 1980, Fred formed Bonsall Architects and Space Planners which became Bonsall-Shafferman in 1982. His firm was widely known for providing services for corporate, health-care, financial, schools, hospitality and recreational companies.
In 1982 Fred was past President of the Eastern Pennsylvania Institute of Architects. Fred ‘s dedication to our City of Bethlehem was evident in serving 44 years as Chairman of the Architectural Review Board. He was so proud of our Historic downtown and helped to preserve and beautify our neighborhood for future generations. It was his honor to be asked to participate in the development of design guidelines for the City of Bethlehem which also included a complete update in 2012 in which he participated.
On September 22, 2022 Mayor William Reynolds signed a Proclamation recognizing Fred’s years of service to Bethlehem that will forever be known as Fred Bonsall Day.
Outside of his passion for his career was his love of family, friends, many cars and Jeep’s throughout the years and traveling to Vermont. He was an amateur musician playing the guitar and Fender bass, a soccer coach for his children and an avid cyclist.
Fred is survived by his wife Randa; his children son Christopher Bradley Bonsall husband of Wendy and a daughter Lindsey Fitzpatrick wife of Matthew, grandchildren Madeline Grace Bonsall, Liam Fitzpatrick, Parker Fitzpatrick, Jacob Boyer, Margaret Boyer and Benjamin Boyer, and his former wife Mary Lynn (Grube) Bonsall wife of Steven Asbath; stepchildren Nathan Robert King husband of Lealand Eve and step daughter Amanda Diane King, step grandchildren Asher King, Delphine King , Madison Carrie King wife of Scott Effting.
