Dr. Constantine N. Stroumbakis
Dr. Constantine N. Stroumbakis, 92, of Macungie, PA passed away in his home on August 9, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Maria (Papamoniodis) Stroumbakis, his beloved spouse of 61 years.
Dr. Stroumbakis was born in 1931 in Tholopatomion, Chios, Greece, the son of the late Nicholas. C. Stroumbakis and Ploumi (Avdeliodis) Stroumbakis. He was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Bethlehem, PA, as well as St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church, Boardman, Ohio.
He is survived by his cherished family, daughters Argyro S. Elliker, wife of Deacon James Elliker of Fleetwood, Ploumi S. Levidis, wife of Pantelis Levidis of Macungie, and son Nicholas C. Stroumbakis, husband of Elon Gruber of Wyomissing; twelve grandchildren – Stephen, husband of Amy, Maria, wife of Thomas, Alexander, husband of Jennifer, Christine, wife of Heath, Elyse, Despina, Maria, Sophia, Constantine, Alexandra, Demetrios and Augustus; eleven great-grandchildren – Stephen, Luke, Emily, James, Georgia, Isaac, Juliette, Elias, Jordan, Memphis and Zoe. He is also survived by his niece, Ploumi, and his many nephews including Kostas his godson, Nicholas, Demetrios, Stavros, and Nicholas, along with their families.
In addition to his wife Maria, he was preceded in death by his precious granddaughter Eleni Levidis, brothers Michael N. and Dimitrios N. Stroumbakis, and nephew, Dimitrios Stroumbakis.
Dr. Stroumbakis graduated from the High School of Chios, The Teacher College of Crete (Pedagogical Academy), graduating first in his class, and the University of Athens in Advanced Elementary Education Studies. He served as an elementary education teacher on the Greek Islands of Samos and his native Chios. He then served two years in the Greek Army, earning the rank of second Lieutenant.
Dr. Stroumbakis immigrated his wife Maria and daughter Argyro to the United States in 1957, joining them upon completing his Greek military service. With the directive of the Greek Ministry of Education, he taught in the Greek American Parochial Schools of Annapolis, MD and Philadelphia, PA. He then earned a Master of Science degree and Doctor of Education degree at the University of Pennsylvania, accepting a position as a professor of education at Slippery Rock University in 1966, where he served until his retirement in 1997. He was elected by the faculty multiple times as Chairman of the Education Department, and was greatly respected by his colleagues and students. After retirement, he and his wife Maria moved to Eastern Pennsylvania to join their children and their families. They became members of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Bethlehem, PA.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at 11:00 am in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1607 West Union Blvd, Bethlehem, PA, 18018. There will be a viewing from 10:00 am. to 11:00 am in the Cathedral. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Allentown, PA.
