Dr. William Edward Schiesser
Dr. William Edward Schiesser (“WES”), age 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 22, 2024. He dedicated his life to academics at Lehigh University and scientific research in various fields, including simulations of engineering and biomedical systems using numerical analysis techniques to solve ordinary and partial differential equations.
William was born in Abington, Pennsylvania on January 9, 1934. He graduated from Upper Moreland High School in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania in 1951. He received his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University in 1955. He continued his studies at Princeton University, where he received a Master of Science, and later a Doctorate, in Chemical Engineering in 1958. Having completed his undergraduate studies on an Army ROTC scholarship, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army after graduating from Lehigh. Upon completing his Doctorate at Princeton, he served a tour of duty in the Army Ordnance Corp at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen, Maryland. He served his country honorably and was discharged from the Army with the rank of Captain.
William married Dolores Rachel Tubio on December 27, 1958 in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1960, William joined the faculty of Lehigh University in the Chemical Engineering Department. He had a long and distinguished career at Lehigh with a tenure of more than 40 years, and was appointed to an endowed chair, the R.L. McCann Professor of Engineering and Computer Science. William took emeritus status at Lehigh in 2004, but continued his research, writing dozens of peer-reviewed academic journal articles and 24 books on scientific computing.
William is survived by his son, William E. Schiesser, Jr., and his wife, Faye; his son, Nathan B. Schiesser, Esq.; granddaughter, Madeline F. Schiesser, Esq.; grandson, Matthew E. Schiesser, and his wife, Maura; sister-in-law, Cheryl W. Tubio; and nieces and nephews, Sarah B. Tubio Earl, M. Domingo Tubio, Dr. Abigail T. Tubio, Laura H. Varas, and Edward M. Schiesser II.
William was pre-deceased by his wife of 64 years, Dolores; parents, Edward V. Schiesser and Laura V. (née Bauer) Schiesser; sister, Dorothy V. Chroninger; brother, Edward M. Schiesser; son, Daniel T. Schiesser; brothers-in-law, Manuel Tubio, Jr. and John C. Heiss; sister-in-law, Arlene T. Heiss; nephew, Frank C. Heiss; and niece, Naomi C. Tubio.
Arrangements were handled by the Herron Funeral Home in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania with services at the convenience of the family. William was laid to rest at the Friedensville Church Cemetery, beside his wife, Dolores, and his son, Daniel.
