Mary Zissis
It is with heavy hearts and an abundance of love and light that we share that our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Mary (Mitsos Helios) Zissis passed away peacefully on September 15, 2023, after succumbing to heart disease. Mary was born on April 7, 1944, in Thebes, Greece, to her late parents Demetrios and Arhontia (Pantagis) Mitsos Helios. Mary was the cherished wife of George Zissis, of whom she was married to for 58 fulfilling, beautiful years. She was also the loving mother of Nikki (Zissis) Giannaras wife of George and Joanna (Zissis) Huisman wife of David, her two most prized accomplishments. Mary had four grandchildren that she treasured, and who loved and admired her: Georgia & Christopher Giannaras and Jack & Nicholas Huisman. Mary was the youngest of four children, predeceased by her brothers Anthony Mitsos and Elefterios Mitsos, and survived by her sister, Rita Latgis.
Mary immigrated with her family to the United States at the age of three. Her family then called Bethlehem home. She was a graduate of Liberty High School, and cosmetology school thereafter. Mary loved her work as a stylist, giving her a creative outlet, and the opportunity to connect with her many loyal customers. After retiring, Mary’s brother was beyond fortunate to have her hostess at his restaurant, The Galley. Mary’s friendly disposition kept customers coming back. Mary’s all time favorite and most loved job was watching her grandchildren grow into bright, accomplished, young adults. Mary was anchored to her grandchildren’s happiness, and her light will continue to shine through their eyes.
Mary enjoyed other creative outlets like flower arranging, decorating, and cooking delicious Greek food. Mary also had a passion for shopping, and was generous to everyone around her. With a welcoming smile and open arms, Mary was loved by everyone who met her.
Mary will be remembered for her love and dedication to her family and her fabulous style. She will be deeply missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
